Orthopaedic Shoeing

To guarantee best conditions for the treatment of horses it is necessary that blacksmith and veterinarian collaborate with each other.

Our clinic works together with the blacksmith Andreas Schwarz who is a experienced specialist for orthopaedic shoeing.

Abnormal postures, stands and gaits are often resulting in lameness. Andreas Schwarz combines his experiences with the diagnosis of our veterinarians to find the most appropriate shoe to solve the problem.

Club or buttress foot in a foal: shortened flexor tendon club foots can develop overnight at a certain stage of life; but hereditary can also be a factor. In some cases corrective shoeing and physiotherapy is an appropriate treatment. But in serious situations the check-ligament has to be cut to create a normal angle.

Severed hoof wall: In difficult cases the horse gets a narcosis during the treatment of the hoof.

Fracture of the distal Phalanx (P1): To put the hoof in rest it is necessary to arrange a closed bar shoe with 4 clips. In a few cases a lag screw technique adopts the fracture to prevent coffin joint arthritis.

Laminitis: Besides intensive medical treatment a brilliant farrier is needed to prevent the hoof from rotation.
